This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me, that I would not normally have to immerse myself in the Spanish language and culture. I am half Nicaraguense and Costa Rican and cannot speak Spanish which has often left me with a feeling of being alienated within my community.
I'm born and raised in San Francisco. I'm currently a junior in high school and am involved in many things including: a Native American youth program of which I lead many of the groups (youth REACH council and Indigenous Roots Cooking Class,) soccer, volleyball, I play the saxophone and I love to pow wow dance.
Growing up, I have always been very involved and aware of the Native American side of my heritage. However this was not the same for my Latin side. I was never taught to speak Spanish and that has left me feeling like an outsider to my own culture. I have been studying Spanish language in school for 2 years now but i felt that i needed more experience with the language. I jumped at the opportunity to travel to Spain because it would enable me to immerse myself in Spanish so that i may become fluent in the language and build an unbreakable connection to my culture through the language.
I hope to become fluent in Spanish and eventually many other languages as well. There is a certain authenticity that comes with being able to speak to someone in their first language. I want to be able to relate to people through language.
My wildest dream is to visit every continent on Earth.
