Rachel has reached her fundraising goal on HandUp!

8 people helped Rachel raise $1146

Why I'm using HandUp for my basic needs.

I was able to pay off a portion of my tickets, but still have $890 left in outstanding tickets. Once that is paid off I will be able to get my drivers licence and to legally drive for the first time in my life! I feel so close to accomplishing such a big goal and really appreciate all of your donations. Thank you.

About me.

I am from Detroit and I have lived here all my life. I've worked in child care, retail, and food service jobs. Right now I volunteer at COTS and C4 Urban Outreach feeding the homeless. I have eight children that I love to spend time with and take care of. I spend my time going to church several days a week, I'm in the choir, and I spend time with my kids in the youth program and after school tutoring. If I'm not volunteering or at church, I'm spending time with my kids. I'm also working to get my GED right now.

My backstory.

I was an alcoholic for 15 years. I came to COTS because I lost my house due to the choices I made while I was drinking. COTS helped me and my family and gave me the support to take control of my life. In 2015 I admitted myself in rehab and I have never looked back since then. I have many things that I now have to get in order now that I am on the right track. Because of what COTS did for me, I want to give back to others in need. COTS taught me how to have a compassionate heart and help others so now I volunteer to help others who are experiencing homelessness.

My goals, moving forward.

Once I get my GED I'm looking to get a position at COTS. Then I hope to go to college to become a Licensed Practitioner Nurse. Paying off my tickets will help me achieve these goals. Most of my life is based on being able to drive. I need to drive my kids to school, get to work, complete errands, etc. Right now I have to leave extremely early to take the bus to do simple things that are only a few minutes away. If I have a car that is running well, I will be able to get to my classes and drop my children off at school and quickly and easily rather than spend two to three hours on the bus to get everyone where they need to go.

Other things I'd like to share about myself.

My proudest moment is my sobriety. To wake up and not be held to a drink is an incredible feeling every day. I thank God for my sobriety, it is everything to me. It is an very hard disease to recover from and God has been truly good to me since I left alcohol alone.
