Why I'm using HandUp for gas cards.

Hello, I'm using HandUp to raise funds for gas cards. My parents are elderly, and I often run errands for them and take them to their doctor's appointments. My vehicle is old, but I am grateful to have it. It allows me the freedom to help my parents which is very important to me. I live on a fixed income and sometimes run short on gas money towards the end of the month. Gas cards would really help during these difficult times.

About me.

I'm a 61 year old man from the Detroit area. I worked at Walmart back stocking product until I suffered two hernias. Due to these injuries, I was not able to work and ended up losing my housing. This was my first time experiencing homelessness. It was something I hope to never endure again. Thanks to South Oakland Shelter, I now have a warm and safe place to call home. I am so grateful for the help I have been given and try to give back to others in any way I can. I enjoy spending time at the library reading and browsing the internet. It is a peaceful environment that helps with my anxiety. I try to focus on the good things in life and maintain a positive attitude.

My backstory.

I was living in a room for rent in Royal Oak when my landlord passed away. The new owners increased the rent, and I had just suffered two hernias at work. I was unable to continue to work and ended up losing my home.

My goals, moving forward.

Now that South Oakland Shelter helped me obtain housing again, my goal moving forward is to ensure I am never homeless again. I have since started receiving SSI so I am able to maintain my bills. Making sure my bills are paid on time is my priority. Now that I have some stability back in my life, I focus on appreciated the little things in life I previously took for granted.

Other things I'd like to share about myself.

I'm an outgoing individual. I want to work hard and do everything in my ability to support myself. I also enjoy helping and spending time my elderly parents. They deserve to have the support they need, and I am happy to be able to help them.
