Support and Celebrate Mental Health! raised $10,070 on HandUp!
Please join us in Celebrating our 9th Anniversary! On October 7, 2008, the Liberation Institute opened its doors. That first day, in one small office sparsely furnished with three old lawn chairs, our founder Stever Dallmann saw our first clients, two homeless men. That day one of those clients went into a detox center and is still clean and sober today!
From that auspicious beginning we have grown, one step at a time, to what we are today, 9 years later: a vibrant diverse community of over 70 amazing volunteer professional healers serving an average of nearly 300 clients every week! In addition to our core therapy and counseling work, we are continuously creating ground breaking new programs, classes, and workshops. It’s been extra busy here at the Liberation Institute! Our Counseling Center is bustling 7 days a week.
The struggles of day-to-day life, along with the impact of recent national events, have brought even more clients to our doors. We have been overwhelmed with requests for help. Our wonderful volunteer therapists have responded by offering more individual therapy sessions and groups. Meanwhile, our other programs, such as the yoga and meditation groups continue to offer the community a wealth of therapeutic tools.
The work we do can be stressful and difficult, but every day we are rewarded with heartwarming stories of success:
A 16 year-old African American young woman we’ll call Anita was referred by us by her probation officer. On the verge of dropping out of school and “just giving up,” she said, “My family and everyone else has thrown me away. Why should I try?” At Liberation she began meeting every week with an art therapist and going to a support group. She kept coming in and working on herself, and it paid off. Now she’s found her creative spirit, has brought up her grades, and volunteers at a children’s center in the tenderloin.
A 74 year old gay Latino man, a retired teacher, came to see us after a recent suicide attempt. He was depressed, saying that all his family and friends had passed away and life had lost it’s meaning. He said, “no one cares.” He started attending one of our meditation groups and weekly therapy sessions at our clinic with a therapist who does truly care. He’s now hopeful, and has a new purpose in life: he’s tutoring a group of teens that includes 16 year old Anita!
We see and hear amazing tales like these every day. The problem is that we are low on funds. We need your help to raise the money needed to meet the ever-increasing demand for these life-changing services.
Happily, to get this urgent campaign started, we have a generous matching grant from Google.org. They will match every donation, dollar for dollar, up to a total of $5,000! That means if our community contributions total at least $5k, we will meet our goal of $10k.
Please help spread the word and donate whatever you can. No contribution is too small.
We are a community of people helping people every day. Together, with your help, we can compassionately change the world.
