MAAT Science Village Summer Science Camp raised $4,100 on HandUp!
The Museum of African American Technology (MAAT) Science Village, a technical Museum sponsored by the Northern California Council of Black Professional Engineers will run a one week summer science camp, July 11-15, 2016 for SF Bay Area minority students in grades 4-8 at its 722 Chester St. location in Oakland. Routinely, the Museum provides hands-on science activities. However, the camp will focus on the underlying science principles and provide more time for students to develop their own project. Many minority students can not afford the $250 registration fee, even tho it is half as much as the average camp fees in the Area. We need your help to make it possible for these student to attend camp. It is a fun and unique experiences for students to learn about science careers, build bridges with gumdrops, create and make their own toys, cook using the sun as the fuel resource and make some of the products that Dr. George Washington Carver did from peanuts and sweet potatoes! They will work directly with minority scientists and engineers that look like them. They will hear about what real scientists and engineers do. The scientists and engineers will share their journey to obtain the education required to become a scientist or engineer. Students will hear how they overcame obstacles which are similar to the ones that the students currently face. >Currently, less than 6% of minorities have technical degrees.
Your help is needed to level the playing field and get a leg up for these students. Your donations will be used to pay the science camp registration fee paid by minorities who can not afford it and help us to buy science supplies that will enable us to give each child a small science kit to keep and cultivate their interest in science long after camp. Your donation will help them to return to school in the fall excited and ready to learn more about science.
