Why I'm using HandUp for household items.

I am so grateful to say I was finally able to get housed. I have a one bedroom apartment that I am trying to furnish. I currently have no income. I have been waiting to hear on my social security disability application. I am hopeful that I will have income soon, but for now I am unable to get basic need items like toilet paper, toiletries, utensils, dishes, gargage can, bedding, clothing, etc... I would be very grateful for any assistance. Thank you for your consideration.

About me.

I was adopted at 6 months old in Pontiac, Michigan. I grew up in West Bloomfield with my adopted family. My mom was a Detroit Police Officer, and my dad worked for United Way of Southeastern Michigan. I was very blessed with great parents. I attended Ferris State University for 2 years and then worked in Parks and Recreation for many years.

My backstory.

When my dad was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia, I helped my mom care for him as times were very difficult. After my dad passed away, my mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. She was a very independent and strong women. She was never one to accept help. As her disease progressed, she needed a full-time caregiver which I gladly became. My mom and I were very close. She had moved into a senior living facility, and I would go there to take care of her 10 to 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. I did this for 7 to 8 years.

I had my own home at the time. Unfortunately, when the COVID-19 epidemic hit, I was not allowed to visit my mom anymore. Her facility was on lockdown. I lost the income I was receiving being her caregiver. As a result, I lost my home and car, and I ended up homeless.

My goals, moving forward.

I am very thankful to have been approved for an apartment through a program at Lighthouse. I am so happy to be housed. One of my main goals moving forward to be rebuild my life and become self-sufficient again. I am currently waiting to hear if I will be approved for SSI. Living without any income is very difficult.

Other things I'd like to share about myself.

I miss my parents terribly. I am so grateful for the time I was able to care for them. This time and the memories we made together keep me going.
