I was born and raised in Michigan to a mother who struggled with homelessness. Throughout my life I have struggled with homelessness and depression. I am the mother of two beautiful children. I lived in an abandoned home for over a year. Thanks to the help of South Oakland Shelter, I signed my first lease. My children now have a home of their own. I enjoy making things I see on Pinterest, and spending quality time with my children.
During my 2nd pregnancy, I became very ill. I was living with my mother when she was evicted. My mother moved out of state to live with someone, so my daughter and I had to live in abandoned homes for a long time. Thankfully, South Oakland Shelter put an end to our homelessness. With their help, I now have a home for both my children. It means so much to me to be able to provide a safe and stable home for my children.
Now that we are settled into our home. I would like to go back to school and earn a degree so I am able to support my children long term. I began the enrollment process, but I need to get a laptop and internet so I am able to complete my homework assignments. I found an internet that only costs $10 a month for low income families, but unfortunately I don't have any income right now. Once I am enrolled in school full time, I will qualify for daycare assistance and can work part time while I finish my education.
The happiest moment of my life was when I signed the lease to our first home. I felt so happy, joyous, and grateful to God. I had been wanting a home for my children more than anything else. That day I realized it had finally happened, and my children had a safe place to stay. Since then, I really believe things can get better for us. I am willing to do whatever it takes to make sure my kids won't have to go through what I went through growing up.
