I have lived in Oakland county my whole life. I have struggled with mental illness and substance use in the past. I have also struggled with chronic homelessness throughout my adult life. Thankfully, I have been in a housing program through South Oakland Shelter for about 5 years now and I am working on my goals to maintain my health and sobriety, and to gain income. I am 8 years sober and have been following a treatment plan with my psychiatrist, therapist and case managers for the past 4 years.
I am in housing and I hope that by following my treatment plan and working with my case managers I will never become homeless again. I love reading mystery books, going for walks and listening to country music.
My goal is to gain income so that I can take care of all the little household needs (laundry, toilet paper, cleaning supplies) that are very difficult for me. Also, once I gain an income, I can begin paying some of my own bills and become more self-sufficient so that South Oakland Shelter can use its resources to help others facing the struggles I had when I first entered the program. I applied for Social Security benefits in early 2018 and am still awaiting a decision on my case.
I love being stably housed because it allows me to spend time with my grandchildren!
