I'm using Handup to fundraise for furniture because I moved into my apartment in October 2019 and don't have basic furniture such as a bed or a couch.
I lived in Southfield, MI from about 2002-2015 with my mother. I've mostly been without a place to live for the past several years; sleeping in hotels, shelters, and sometimes a tent, In 2019 I found a nice apartment in Pontiac, and I'm looking forward to progressing now that I know where I'll lay my head each night.
I used to have furniture in a storage unit while I didn't have a place to stay. Unfortunately I had to come to the decision to let the storage rent lapse so I could afford to better take care of myself and pay for hotels and food to survive. My mother was put into a nursing home in 2015, and the items in storage that I lost belonged to both of us. I regret that this had to happen but I'm hoping that this new apartment represents a new chapter in my life.
My goals now that I'm in housing are to re-gain my health and strength. I've neglected dental issues and haven't been able to taken care of my back and knees in the ways that I should have been. I'm now going to the gym multiple times a week to exercise and strengthen my legs. I also hope to pay back on some student loans and eliminate my debt.
Additionally, I'm in the midst of appealing a decision for disability and compensation benefits through the VA.
Ultimately for me, getting back to being a productive individual is my ultimate goal!
