I'm using HandUp to get a laptop so I can go to school, work, and move forward with my life. I'm unable to do physical work due to disability and this laptop will enable me to overcome my challenges with dyscalculia and other learning disabilities by downloading adhoc programs or software apps.
I have been in San Francisco since 2008. I have been homeless since then. I am disadvantaged with a learning disability and other health issues but have found a therapeutic outcome taking college classes and concerning myself with the highest possible grades. In my younger years I liked to take long walks but lately it's been a challenge due to schedule and the on-set of geriatrics.
I've been struggling with homelessness since 2000. I came to San Francisco for warmer weather and better opportunities but have struggled finding stable work and housing due to physical disabilities. I'm focused on making a path for myself through education and am fundraising for a laptop so I can get a job and continue with online classes.
I have dyslexia, dyscalculia, and ADHD. Vision therapies and other therapies that I need ARE available but they are too costly for me. I am diligent but struggling to overcome my disabilities.
There is software that I can use in lieu of clinical therapy. With a laptop, I'll be able to install the software/s I need to overcome my disabilities without expensive therapy or medication.
I hope to attain a bachelors degree. I've made progress at City College, but the progress has been interrupted due to my learning disability. I feel I can do more than get the legal accommodations I am entitled to while in school.
When I do well in school and am progressing I feel happy and optimistic and closer to self sufficiency and independence. The legally mandated accommodations are not sufficient towards successfully completing higher courses necessary for graduation.
The core issues must be overcome with therapy and that is not available to disadvantaged folks. So thinking outside the box I found alternatives via apps and programs that could be downloaded.
If used consistently and frequently they should bring fundamental changes to eye-brain coordination and other aspects of overcoming various learning and processing disabilities.
