HandUp is a great platform to tell my story, and be connected with people I meet and who know me. I'm amongst other people in similar situations on the platform, so I'm in really good company.
I grew up in Palo Alto, I lived in Florida for the last 15 years. I've been homeless for about 10 months, I have mental illness which includes childhood trauma, PTSD, paranoia, schizophrenia, and DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder).
I have DID derived from severe childhood trauma. I struggled with autism and mental illness throughout my life. I struggled maintaining the other identities and avoiding suicide. In 2015 I was homeless in SF I lost touch with reality and thought I was on a TV show, I didn't believe I was human.
I ran from Florida to SF for safety reasons, because everything was on the table. I arrived in SF hoping to do therapy and live in my car.
My number one goal is to do therapy. San Francisco has the infrastructure that all of Florida doesn't. There are literally no therapists in Florida, that take Medicaid that handle the health issues I am dealing with.
Therapy is very important, and also working. Longer term goal for me is to go to school again.
One thing that brings me to my knees with happiness is random acts of kindness. San Francisco is full of empathetic people that really care. It would be my dream for the rest of the world to be like San Francisco.
