Why I'm using HandUp for my basic needs.

I am a mother of 4 and have just moved into housing with my family after 6 years of experiencing homelessness. I have been out of the workforce for the past 20 years but I am now going back to school for C&C Machinery as it's something I feel familiar with. I am currently the caregiver for my eldest son who has a disability and I am his advocate.

About me.

I am from Southern California and have been an advocate in LA for homelessness. I first came to Contra Costa County seeking shelter and then moved to SF in 2015 also seeking shelter with my family. I became homeless in 2013 after the passing of my grandfather who raised me. I have 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls and I am the care giver for my eldest son because of his mental health disabilities. I have also been working through and healing from my own past traumas. We have dealt with some very serious and sensitive issues that I am still healing from.

My backstory.

Due to various family crisis, involving not only my children but my siblings as well who were experiencing their own crisis, I have been a care giver and an advocate for mental health as well as homelessness. Since being in the Bay Area, I have experienced some unexpected issues with identity theft and fraud. I am in the midst of a recovery plan, for not just myself but my children.

My goals, moving forward.

I was housed in 2018. Due to the trauma that has been inflicted onto my family, I am reaching out for resources and for better stability and direction. I am currently going back to school to move into vocational trainings and have been enjoying my studies! I would really love to go back to advocacy. I have been inspired by working with mother who had experienced homelessness and Veterans. I would like to continue to support other individuals and families.

Other things I'd like to share about myself.

My moments of feeling fulfilled is when I see others who are in need having their needs met and that is where my inspiration and passion for advocacy comes in.
