I recently moved into Section 8 housing! I used to experience homelessness and am now moving into a permanent unit. It will have no furniture or anything and I'll need a bed to sleep on. It's the most needed thing to be able to sleep at night on a bed and with your support I'll be able to maintain my housing and get a night's rest!
**NOTE TO DONORS: We value your donations, and respect your intention to support people in need with their specific fundraising goals. On occasion, the immediate needs or an emergency may arise, and a Participant might require support in another way for safety, health, housing, or employment. As such, your donation may be used for an immediate basic need not mentioned in the above goal, such as groceries, health costs, or housing support. Any changes will always be approved in advance by PHC Staff. We will provide up to date information on how these funds are being used through an update on HandUp. By making a donation to this campaign, you are confirming your approval of this potential change. If you have any questions, or do not wish that your donation be used for any alternative goals, please contact PHC staff directly.
We greatly appreciate your support to our Participants!
I'm originally from Indiana. I was in Florida when I was injured during my fall due to my epilepsy; my seizures had been getting worse. I was put in the hospital for over a week. That's when the doctor told me that I wouldn't be able to lift heavy material. I lost two of my jobs, and I was no longer able to pay for my apartment. So I lost my apartment and had to sell almost all my belongings to have some money. Then I moved here to San Francisco, where my friend said I could stay over the holidays and recover. I became homeless right after New Year's, and that's when I moved into a shelter. At that point, I was feeling better and started to get things in order--like getting on disability. I've had epilepsy since I was a child, but it is now getting to the point of being uncontrollable. I hate not being able to work, but I'm working toward goals that I have for myself.
A big goal for me is to secure housing; I'm on a waiting list, and I'm really trying to make sure that I move forward in this area.
My proudest moment is when I graduated from high school by myself, without the help of my parents. I was homeless at that point in my life, as well, because I didn't have parental units at the time. I had to think positively and think toward my future; I've always figured things out since that point in my life.
The thing that makes me happiest is that I love photography. I love taking pictures of random things that stand out to me--landscapes and everything that sticks out to me in the world. I like to see the world through my own eyes, my own looking glass.
