Being so homeless, I am currently without a source of income to provide myself with basic necessities such as shoes, clothes, a bed, toiletries, etc. During my time in shelters and wandering the streets, I have witnessed people eating from garbage cans. I have witnessed people with mental illnesses. I have witnessed people crawling on their belly to take things from others that have less than them. These intense experiences have motivated me beyond doubt to acquire senior citizen housing, which I am eligible for at the age of 68. I have witnessed things that I have never dreamt of seeing before on these cold mean streets of Detroit, better known as Motown. I truly and sincerely would like to share my story with the world that is around me.
I was born at Sunbees hospital at River Rouge in 1951 on April 25th. I spend my time by facing the reality of the situation in my day to day living around people who are faced with the same dilemmas as myself. I keep my head held high and my energy level strong to make it through each and every day on the mean streets of Detroit.
After losing my mother, I was not able to keep up with the day to day activities in the house. The house eventually became dilapidated. The plumbing, the roof --gone. One day while eating at McDonald's, I could hear sirens zooming past me in the direction of my house. And Lord behold, I noticed from afar that It was my mothers house ablaze in the dead of winter on my childhood block.
My goal in life is to be a responsible person and bring stability to my life, and live life on better terms with a positive and open mindset about people, places, that surround me in my journey of being homeless. I would like to share my wisdom, my smiles, and my laughter because in many cases, these are the things that men and women lose first, when weathering the storms of homelessness. I care to share everything that is alive inside of me while I still have the mindset that God has bestowed upon me. I would like to be a person that could share my story whether through the art of story telling or through the agency which I partner with, Community and Home Support.
What makes me happiest is that I have grown from all of this to become a much better man with an open heart towards humanity. Given the chance I would like to leave something behind for my nieces and nephews about their Uncle Terry that they can share and that they have witnessed with their own eyes of my struggles of being homeless.
