Why I'm using HandUp for my basic needs.

I am using HandUp to fundraise for a laptop, note taker and internet service to go back to college.

About me.

Hi, my name is Justice and I am from Detroit, Michigan. I moved to San Francisco in 2007 and have been here for about eight years now. I used to work in nonprofits doing workshops in education about queer youth, women, people of color, and underserved communities. I also create both visual and written art work, as well as music. I also like playing video games and reading books for fun.

My backstory.

Despite my many talents, I got hit by a car in September of 2013 and suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result. Now, I am trying to relearn how to spell and write. There aren't a lot of resources for people with brain injuries if you don't have much money, so I enrolled in school at City College. However, there are limited resources even in school for my needs.

My goals, moving forward.

Right now I'm in school, and even though I'm doing well, there are still things that limit what I can do to move forward. I am working hard towards earning my High School diploma, and plan to study and prepare over this summer to re-educate myself and rehabilitate myself. Every person's brain injury is unique and there's no real way to tell what people will remember after brain trauma. It has taken some time even for me to realize what it is that I cannot remember anymore. But, I can re-learn things, and I am willing to take the initiative to do that, which is why I am here.

Other things I'd like to share about myself.

My wildest dream to have a dog as an animal companion. A black, female Labrador perhaps.

But also, my other wildest dream is to go to Japan to do art there.
